New Jersey Offshore Fishing Report 10-30-15

No offshore reports were available from weekdays this week, because the storm weathered out the angling. But a few reports were available from the latter part of last week through the weekend.

Manasquan Inlet

Longfin tuna, quite a few, seemed boated on the east side of Hudson Canyon toward the 100 Square, said Eric from The Reel Seat in Brielle. A few yellowfins did, too, and mostly yellowfins seemed to swim the west corner. All the tuna were chunked, overnight and during daytime. Some were jigged on the chunk, and a handful of swordfish were landed on the overnight chunk.

Fishing for tuna remained good on the Gambler from Point Pleasant Beach, a report said on the party boat’s website. A beautiful, warm eddy’s been moving slowly south along the Continental Shelf, “and the fish are frenzied in it,” it said. Yellowfin tuna and longfin tuna 30 to 100 pounds were pummeled on butterfish, sardines and squid. Jigs are catching for anglers “that stick with it,” it said. Tuna trips had been slated to end after October. But because the angling’s good, tuna trips will now also fish once a week in November, from 8 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Monday to Tuesday. Don’t miss the angling – best in years, no sign of slowing down, the report said. To book, telephone 732-295-7569 or book online. The boat will fish inshore for striped bass every day except Tuesdays, starting Sunday.

Barnegat Inlet

On the Super Chic from Barnegat Light, tuna fishing was good at Hudson Canyon on an overnight trip last week on Wednesday to Thursday, Capt. Ted said. Yellowfin tuna to 70 pounds and a small swordfish were heaved in. All the tuna were chunked, mostly at night. Eighteen mahi mahi to 15 or 16 pounds, including some sizable, were bagged, when the trip arrived at the canyon and first fished for them at lobster-pot buoys. Tuna fishing was tough on an overnighter Saturday to Sunday in screaming current at the Hudson. Seas weren’t rough, but the current was too strong. But some yellowfins were landed.

Current ripped on a tuna trip Saturday night on the Miss Barnegat Light, a report on the party boat’s website said. That was tough to fish, and a few yellowfin tuna and longfin tuna were picked early in the night. A blast of big yellowfins showed up at first light, and some were caught, and some were lost. Tuna fishing was decent on a trip Friday to Saturday throughout the night. Current ran strong, but flatlined sardines hooked the tuna. The fish began biting in the first hour of fishing and were picked steadily throughout the night, except when a couple of blue sharks and a sizable mako shark were a nuisance a couple of hours. Three anglers limited out on yellowfins and bagged some longfins and mahi mahi. Two swordfish were boated, and a white marlin was released. Space was available on tuna trips today and Saturday, the year’s final trips for the fish aboard. See the tuna schedule and booking info online. Trips will jig bluefish and striped bass 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday starting November 7, and maybe on other days, depending on how good the fishing is.
