New Jersey Offshore Fishing Report 10-27-06

NOTE: It’s finally that time of year when winds howl more than not, and most offshore trips get weathered out than sail, and offshore reports roll in as infrequently as flat seas. But boats will continue to set a course for the canyons for some weeks, and reports will be posted until the last charters brave the short windows of fair weather.

Sandy Hook

Andrea’s Toy Charters did no offshore fishing because of rough seas, Capt. Freddy Gamboa said. He runs open-boat trips to the canyons for mixed bags of tuna, mahi mahi, billfish and sharks once a week whenever the weather allows, and spots are available.

Shark River Inlet

Capt. Ralph from Last Lady Fishing Charters cancelled an open-boat canyon trip for October 31 to November 1, because large and small bluefin tuna are at the Mudhole, he said in an e-mail. So now an individual-reservation trip will sail for the bluefins on one of those days, depending on the weather, with a maximum of six passengers, but the spots are full.

Manasquan Inlet

Tuna fishing at Hudson Canyon was good last week whenever the weather allowed boats to sail, said Dave from The Reel Seat in Brielle. The party boats did well on tuna there, and two tuna was the fewest that any customer reported bagging on the head boats, and some hooked as many as seven. Dave sailed as a guest on the Jenny Lee while the boat fished on a charter at the Hudson last week from Monday to Tuesday, and the tuna fishing was good on the chunk, and Dave hooked fish on Shimano butterfly jigs, and the boat did no trolling. But there was a troll bite that Monday at the canyon, and the Pepper trolled a mix of 11 yellowfin and longfin tuna at the Hudson that day. Some bluefin tuna 30 or 40 pounds bit at the Mudhole early last week when the weather was okay, and one customer trolled the bluefins on Reel Seat 6-inch spreader bars.

Four canyon trips were weathered out on the Defiant, Capt. John said. Two canyon trips are slated for this weekend, but the weather forecast didn’t look good. The Defiant will return to its winter home at the Ocean Reef Club at Key Largo during the second week of November, and charters there will target fish including wahoo, sailfish, mahi mahi and groupers. The Florida rates are posted on the Defiant’s web site, and reservations are being accepted.

Winds were blowing like heck, so no offshore trips sailed on the Katie H, Capt. Mike said. Two charters are supposed to fish for tuna on overnighters today and tomorrow.

Tuna fishing on the party boat Jamaica was weathered out most of the week from strong winds and big seas, but the fishing was still good on a trip Sunday to Monday for yellowfins and longfins on bait and jigs, said Greg from Brielle Bait & Tackle.

Great Egg Harbor Inlet

Offshore boaters scored large numbers of yellowfin tuna while trolling instead of chunking at the Baltimore and Poorman’s canyons last week, said a fax from T.C. from Brennan Marine in Somers Point.

Cape May Inlet

Note: All Cape May charter captains who contribute reports to this site have finished offshore fishing for the year.

Trolling for tuna was good early last week at the east wall of the Wilmington Canyon, said a fax from Matt from Jim’s Bait & Tackle in Cape May. The Debbie’s Toy limited out on yellowfin tuna and bagged six dolphin while trolling the 100-Fathom line last week. Some tuna were also banged on the overnight chunk then, and the Chasin’ Tail overnighted at Baltimore Canyon at the notch on the West Wall last week and went 6 for 9 on yellowfins.

Yellowfin tuna were fought at the Baltimore and Wilmington canyons last week, said a fax from Capt. Fred from Harbor View Marina in Cape May.
