Spro Bucktail Jigs

Spro Jigs have become a generic name.

Like calling any tissue a Kleenex, any painkiller a Tylenol or any soda a Coke, an angler could call any bucktail jig a Spro.

A fishing buddy would know what the angler means.

That goes to show that Spro set a standard in bucktail jigs.

But bucktails were around long before Spro. Why did they become
a standard?

They catch fish. Simple as that.

Spro Bucktail Jigs are a versatile lure that will trick any fish from fluke to striped bass to largemouth bass to mahi mahi.

They can be jigged off the bottom, cast into a school of fish and worked back quickly, swum along or even trolled.

In Jersey, Spro jigs are especially the hot ticket for fluke fishing, the must-have item in any serious flattie-fishing arsenal.

They’re not a new product, but here’s a rundown of the different Spro Bucktail Jigs, all in one place.

Spro Prime Bucktail Jigs

The Prime Bucktail Jig is the workhorse of the Spro fleet.

The unique shape of the head and the placement of the hook eyelet help bring the lure to life, the company says. Bulging eyes, a holographic finish and “blazing” colors, the company says, add to the attraction.

The uniqueness is that the jig doesn’t fall or hang straight down like other bucktails, and instead glides through the water, almost swimming, the company says.

When jigged, the body stays almost parallel to the bottom, maintaining a natural appearance.

Like all Spro products, the jigs are made with durable, super-sharp Gamakatsu hooks.

They’re available in 1/4-, 3/8-, 1/2-, 3/4-, 1-, 1-1/2-, 2-, 3-, 4- and 6- ounce sizes and a variety of colors.

Spro Live Bucktail Jigs

Spro Live Bucktail Jigs are the next generation of Spro jigs and feature the same qualities as the Prime Bucktail Jigs, but come with an added look. The head features an angled, “screaming” mouth to give an extra impression of a frightened baitfish.

The shape of the head also gives the jig a slightly different action and vibration.

They can be fished in the same ways as the Prime Bucktails, come in 1-, 2- and 3-ounce sizes and are offered in a variety of colors.

Mudkicker Bucktail Jigs

Mudkicker Bucktail Jigs are especially designed to rest still on the bottom, pausing to entice a wary fish.

The design of the head allows the Mudkicker to lie flat on the bottom for a pause. Then anglers can hop or bounce the jig. The design also causes the hook to remain upright to avoid snags and help increase hook-ups with fish.

So this jig is more of a bottom-fishing, hopping and bouncing one than a swimmer.

It comes in 1-, 2- and 3-ounce sizes and various colors.

Baby Bucktail Jigs

The Baby Bucktail Jig is simply a smaller jig offered in 1/8- and 1/16-ounce sizes.

It’s meant for crappie jigging, but surely the Baby Bucktail could be used for other purposes, like weakfishing or fluking in shallow bays, where smaller-sized jigs are commonly used, because the smaller size attracts bites but can still reach the bottom in the shallower depths.

The Baby Bucktail can be jigged along the bottom, cast and swum back, trolled or hung under a float.

The lure stays parallel to the bottom when fished and features many of the same aspects as the rest of the jigs, including swimming action, a Gamakatsu hook, bulging eyes and a variety of colors.

Jelly/Parachute Jigs

In addition to bucktail jigs, Spro also makes a Jelly/Parachute Jig with a parachute-style tail made from non-bucktail materials meant for extra durability and lively action.
