Tony Maja's Bunker Spoons and E-Z Outrodders

June is trolling-the-ocean for striped
bass month.

And there’s a buzz among trollers
this year

Can you hear it?

What’s that they’re saying?

Is it Tony Maja’s Bunker Spoons?

Yep. That’s it.

That’s the buzz: Tony Maja’s Custom Bunker Spoons.

You got your set? Why not?

Tony Arcabascio, a well-known angler with a boat named the Maja—an acronym for wife Marie, son Anthony, daughter Jeanine and Anthony Sr. himself—has been making his own bunker spoons 40 years.

After perfecting them all that time, the spoons are now available to the public.

Tony, who lives in Bayville near Barnegat Bay, originated the spoons when he lived on Staten Island. Although the spoons were made at first from aluminum, he now makes them from heavy stainless steel to sink deeper.

That allows less wire or line to be let out, and makes only one keel necessary.

He eventually found that a 9/0 Mustad stainless-steel salmon hook swam best.

The spoons are meant to imitate a wounded bunker instead of a swimming one to trigger more bites.

They’re also built to swim more subtly than others, and the hook and swimming action help prevent foul hook-ups, Tony says.

Tony has also introduced the E-Z Outrodders.

Unlike standard outrodders that only hold a rod in a fixed, horizontal position, the E-Z Outrodder is hinged.

It allows the rod in the holder to be lifted into the upright position to remove the pole during the hook-up. That’s easier than hanging over the side to remove the rod with traditional outrodders.

Of course, the outrodders can be used for any type of fishing that traditionally uses the holders, not just striper fishing.

E-Z Outrodders web page.
