During my time in college many many moons ago I wrote my masters thesis on the effects of commercial and recreations fishing on marine ecosystem biomass. In one journal I read a scary statistic that claimed 70% of a commercial fishers net load is considered bycatch and discarded. which basically means the fish are suffocated and dumped back into the waters. Perhaps the government should take a look at forcing commercial fisherman to develop more ecologically friendly methods of fishing that would allow better targeting of specific species. |
