Delaware Bay Fishing Report 4-29-14

Port Elizabeth

Weather was so windy that getting news from the bay was difficult, said Sharon from The Girls Place Bait & Tackle in a phone call on Monday. That was the first day in sometime with calm weather, and even the weekend was windy. Winds were forecast to blow again this week, starting today. But a few striped bass were known to be boated from the bay, when boaters got the weather to sail. Big white perch were plucked from brackish rivers all around. One angler bloodwormed a striper larger than 30 inches from Maurice River near the shop. Drum were yet to be heard about from the bay this season. But fishing for the boomers, usually in May, will be a focus soon. Weakfish were heard about. The bunker supplier found them in the nets in the bay. Anglers hooked weaks in the back bay toward Corson’s Inlet. No many boats were launched into slips yet. Anglers with trailered boats and shore anglers were heard from most. That all seemed to run late this year, because of cold waters, after the cold winter. A few customers tried crabbing, but waters were too cold. Most commercial crabbers were yet to set pots in the bay. Fresh bait wasn’t easy to obtain, because the winds prevented commercial boats from sailing. Fresh bunker and clams were stocked this weekend, but the supply was limited. Still, the shop’s been stocking all the usual baits, and telephone ahead to reserve, and the store will be able to supply the bait. The Girls Place is located on Route 47, just after Route 55 ends, on the way to the bay. It’s the long, one-story, yellow building on the right, with plenty of parking, including for trailered boats.
