NEW YORK

Point Lookout

The snowstorm riled up and muddied waters, the party boat Captain Al’s Facebook page said. When the vessel started cod fishing again with a trip Saturday after the weather, the fish were caught at every place fished on the outing, “but no numbers,” the page said. The angling improved a little on Sunday’s trip, and 20 cod were bagged. Waters were still riled up and muddied, but that should settle down. Weather forecasts didn’t look good for trips to sail afterward through today. But weather looks good for Wednesday and Thursday. The Captain Al is this site's closest Long Island cod boat to New Jersey, and trips run 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. See More Info. Call: 516-623-2248.

VIRGINIA

Virginia Beach

The weekly party boat trip to Norfolk Canyon was weathered out Saturday with Rudee Inlet Charters, Capt. Skip Feller said. For a moment, the trip was rescheduled for Sunday, because weather looked better then. But the forecast changed, and that trip was also nixed. The unique trips mostly target blueline tilefish each winter at the canyon, several hours from port. But a variety of fish can be cranked in, including black belly rosefish, wreckfish, barrelfish and, when the trips push deeper, golden tilefish and groupers. Call: 757-422-5700 or 757-425-3400. Several boats fished the ocean for striped bass Saturday from Virginia Beach Fishing Center, a report on the marina’s Web site said. All the captains heard from said tons of the fish, bait and birds working the bait were around, “but none of the stripers are biting at the moment,” the report said. Nobody could be sure why, but they generally guessed that bait was too abundant. “… there is so much bait, the fish aren’t really interested in anything that the boats are offering …” it said. Weather was too rough for the boaters to fish on other days, and striper season was opened on January 1 in the ocean off Virginia. Anglers hope that the current cold front will help draw stripers that will bite into the waters. Stripers winter in the ocean off Virginia after migrating from the entire eastern seaboard farther north this season. Sometimes they remain off Virginia, and sometimes they migrate as far south as North Carolina, depending on how cold winter becomes. Bluefin tuna have also showed up in the same waters as stripers off Virginia in recent years. Anglers hope the cold front will also attract them. Visit Web Site.

FLORIDA

Islamorada

Fishing with Captain Easy Charters was pretty good, Capt. Bruce Andersen said. Sailfishing was fairly good, and a couple were landed aboard Tuesday. Lots of healthy-sized blackfin tuna were hooked during sailfishing lately. That was along the offshore edge of the reef, 3 to 5 miles from port, on slow-trolled, livelined ballyhoos and cigar minnows. Big king mackerel and a few wahoos were sometimes taken in the area. Weather was rough or windy recently but mostly warm, usually almost 80 degrees. A cold front was coming in now.  Call: 305-451-9578 or 305-360-2120. Visit Web Site.
