Delaware Bay Fishing Report 10-13-15

Money Island

Three boats headed for striped bass on the bay this weekend from Money Island Marina, Bruce said. One of the trips landed a 26-inch striper, bagging the fish with a bonus tag. The tag allows an angler to bag one striper 24 inches to less than 28 per year. That’s in addition to the daily bag limit of one striper 28 inches to less than 43 and another 43 inches or longer per angler. The trips fished with fresh bunker, the popular bait for the angling, and the bunker was stocked at the shop. The season was somewhat early for peak striper fishing, but the angling could light up at any moment, and anglers began fishing for them. Customers who fished from the dock tore up good white perch fishing from Nantuxent Creek during the weekend. Lots of throwback stripers also bit in the creek from the dock. The dock anglers fished bloodworms that caught well. The shop stocks no bloods. It carries live grass shrimp when available, another bait great from the dock. But none was stocked currently, and the shrimp supplier failed to show up since the nor’easter. The marina features a boat ramp, boat slips, dry-dock boat storage, a fishing dock, gas, bait and a few items of tackle. A 12-foot aluminum boat with a 6 h.p. outboard is available to rent to fish Nantuxent Creek, running past the shop. The rate is $40 for 3 hours and $80 for a full day.

Cape May

The striped bass migration will probably begin to arrive along the northern state in the next weekend or two, Capt. George from the Heavy Hitter said. Striper fishing usually starts becoming best off Cape May at the beginning of November. The first trips for stripers will probably bunker-chunk on Delaware Bay on the boat. Trolling for the bass usually begins to catch on the ocean in mid-November from Stone Harbor to Ocean City aboard. Larger, mature stripers make up the migration. They’re heading south for winter, stopping at places like Delaware Bay along the way in fall. Younger, smaller stripers, yet to migrate, might already bite in the bay and similar waters this season. Plenty sometimes hit right in the slips at the marina. Clams catch them there at night, and on some nights, two will bite, and on others, lots will. Cooler water this season can make them active. If anglers are interested in striper fishing, the charters are beginning to book aboard. Currently, small bluefish probably schooled off Cape May Point. They usually do through October. Some boats sailed for tuna on the ocean this weekend on overnight trips from Cape May, and George would hear how they fared this week. Charters will tuna fish on the Heavy Hitter this season, if the fish show up within range. Sea bass charters will begin once sea bass season is opened starting October 22. Blackfish charters will fish once the bag limit is raised to six of the tautog, from the current limit of one. Telephone if interested in any of this fishing.
