New Jersey Inshore Saltwater Fishing Report 1-26-15

Neptune

No trips fished in past days with Last Lady Fishing Charters, Capt. Ralph said. Individual-reservation trips and charters are fishing for blackfish and cod, and he’ll determine the future schedule after this snowstorm.

Belmar

The party boat Big Mohawk was blackfishing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, and the angling was good, the vessel’s Facebook page said at the time. That was the most recent post on the page, and some anglers had already limited out. A trip was expected to fish the next day, Friday, and that was expected to be the final trip for some days, “before we get slammed with some bad weather,” it said. The Big Mohawk is blackfishing 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. ***Update, Saturday, 1/31:*** Light wind is forecast for Sunday, and a trip is expected to fish that day, for cod, blackfish and ling, on the Mohawk.

Brielle

***Update, Saturday, 1/31:*** Wind will keep the party boat Jamaica II docked today, but Sunday’s wreck-fishing trip is expected to sail, in forecasts for calm wind. The boat had been fishing for whiting every Friday, but that angling was slow, so those trips will also wreck-fish. The Jamaica II is wreck-fishing 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday and 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Friday. However, Sunday’s trip will return at 4 p.m., because of the Super Bowl.

Point Pleasant Beach

***Update, Thursday, 1/29:*** No trips fished in past days on the party boat Dauntless, and no anglers wanted to sail, because of weather, Capt. Butch said. Some probably couldn’t reach the boat, because of snow. Ten or 12 inches of snow fell locally in this week’s storm, but the snow is all cleaned up now. “Until the next one!” Butch said. But during the weekend, a few blackfish, a handful of ling and an occasional small cod were scooped aboard. Fishing was slow, but the boat is one of the few, if not the only, that sails daily throughout winter in the state. Christmas is the only day the vessel isn’t scheduled to fish each year. The boat fished a little deeper than before, in 130 feet, and the ocean was 42 degrees on the fishing grounds, and 38 along the beach. The Dauntless is bottom-fishing 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

Blackfishing picked the tautog here and there but was slow Thursday and Friday on the party boat Norma-K III, Capt. Matt wrote on the vessel’s Facebook page. Saturday’s trip was weathered out, and he expected Sunday’s to sail, and to give deeper water “a shot” on the trip, he said. But no report about Sunday was posted on either Facebook or the vessel’s website. The Norma-K III is blackfishing 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily. A special cod trip, reservations required, will be slated soon. ***Update, Thursday, 1/29:*** The boat will now fish every Saturday and Sunday, for blackfish, cod and ling, Capt. Matt wrote in a report on the vessel’s website. The trips previously fished daily for blackfish, and a trip Sunday picked a few blackfish in deeper water, “but it was still not up to par,” he said. The angling was slow on the previous trips. An 8-1/2-pound blackfish won the pool on the trip, and one angler iced a good-sized, keeper cod on the outing. A few throwback cod were released. Trips will now fish 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, for blackfish, cod and ling, in the deep. Because the deep will be fished, and cod and ling, in addition to blackfish, will be targeted, clams will be carried for bait, along with green crabs and white crabs that were carried previously. A special cod trip, limited to 30 anglers, reservations required, has been slated for 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, February 10. ***Update, Saturday, 1/31:*** No trip will fish today, because of gale wind, but weather looks great for Sunday’s trip, Matt wrote in a report on the boat’s website. Room remains for the cod trip on February 10.

Barnegat Light

The rental rods, 64 of them, were cleaned and filled with new line, and the engine rooms are squeaky clean, and the party boat Miss Barnegat Light is being painted, the vessel’s Facebook page said. “Work list is getting smaller,” it said. “Now if the weather would improve.” The boat will resume fishing in spring, usually starting with bluefishing. Watch this video of bluefishing aboard last fall.

Mystic Island

Drop off reels to be serviced to be ready for spring fishing, a report on Scott’s Bait & Tackle’s website said. The store is closed for renovations until March 1, but reels can be dropped off, if the crew is at the shop. Call ahead to find out at 609-296-1300. March 1 is opening day of striped bass season in rivers and bays, and nearby Graveling Point is one of the year’s first places to give up the catches each year in New Jersey. That’s a shore-angling place at the confluence of Great Bay and Mullica River, and the shop annually awards a $100 gift certificate to the angler who weighs-in the first keeper striper from Graveling or nearby Pebble Beach, another shore-angling spot. The fish seem to be attracted to the flats off Graveling and the river’s warmer water than the bay at the time of year. Plus, the spot is simply accessible to anglers, another reason the catches come from there. Though the physical store is closed, its online store, PennParts.com, is open. That features all Penn reel parts currently manufactured, and many no longer manufactured. It also includes other tackle, and free online schematics for Penn reels. The Sunshine Foundation Fishing Seminar will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, February 7, at Redman’s Lodge at 145 West Main Street or Route 9 in Tuckerton.

Absecon

***Update, Thursday, 1/29:*** Capt. Dave was back at Absecon Bay Sportsman Center, after visiting his Guatemala charter business, he wrote on the store’s Facebook page. “I would rather be pulling on sailfish than pushing this snow, but it is time to get things started for a great fishing season,” he said. Several boat slips, mostly for smaller boats, are available at the store’s marina, “if you are tired of trailering and want to get out on the water more this year,” he said. At Guatemala, Dave improved the charter business even more. Visit the Guatemala charters website.

Ocean City

White perch were heard about that were reeled from Great Egg Harbor River, said Ed from Fin-Atics. Ice formed on some parts of the river, “not real thick,” he said. But weather is supposed to be colder in the next days. No trips were known about that fished the ocean for catches like blackfish. Fin-Atics is open Fridays through Sundays through February and will be open daily starting on March 1. That’s opening day of striped bass season in bays and rivers.
