Offseason Fishing Report 2-17-15

NEW YORK

Point Lookout

None of the daily trips for cod sailed on the party boat Captain Al in the weather in past days, Capt. Tom Weiss said. Beginning Friday, the trips will only sail every Friday through Sunday. A grand total of one person, he said, showed up to fish, and photos showed the harbor iced-in on the boat’s Facebook page on Monday. But as soon as this extreme cold ends, the trips will shape up to fish. If cod are in, the trips target them. Otherwise, the trips fish wrecks for ling, cod or whatever bites. The Captain Al, sailing 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., is this site's nearest party boat to New Jersey that targets cod daily, or weekly, when the Friday through Sunday schedule begins. See More Info. Call: 516-623-2248. ***Update, Tuesday, 2/17*** “We successfully broke up the ice at the marina,” the boat’s Facebook page said, and the vessel will be shaped up to sail at 6 a.m. Wednesday. Weather looks good, it said.

NORTH CAROLINA

Hatteras

“Boy, it blew,” a report said on the website from The Roost Bait & Tackle at Teach’s Lair Marina. Wind gusted to 70 m.p.h., and Rodanthe Pier partly collapsed into the ocean. That was about the same 80 feet at the end that was replaced last year. Some roads were underwater, and seas were angry. No boats fished. Several puppy drum to 25 inches were beached from the surf, between storms. Otherwise, last week through the weekend was unfishable. Wind up to 50 m.p.h. was expected last weekend. Air temperature plummeted as low as in the 20 degrees this past week, and wasn’t supposed to reach above freezing until today. This was a dismal winter of weather. “ … but, spring is right around the corner,” it said. For all anglers knew, bluefin tuna swam right off the coast. But with no boats fishing, “I guess we will never know,” the report said. “Hang in there folks … .” Visit Website.

Morehead City

None of the fleet fished, because of weather, said Loretta Davis from Captain Stacy Fishing Center. Giant bluefin tuna were docked earlier this winter, and the fish could show up again this season. “They could, or could not,” she said. Boats quit fishing for them. Weekly party boat trips were also weathered out that are bottom-fishing. Visit Website.

FLORIDA

Islamorada

A little of everything was hooked aboard with Captain Easy Charters, Capt. Bruce Andersen said. Lots of vermilion snappers were pitched aboard, like before, when trips deep-dropped bait like squid to bottom, in 400 to 750 feet of water, 8 to 11 miles from port. Other fish also snapped during the deep dropping, but mostly vermilions were on a tear. An amberjack 80 or 85 pounds, the big, tough-fighting species, was smashed on live bait dropped along the Islamorada Hump. Fishing for them, and sometimes blackfin tuna, should take off in the next months. The Hump is an underwater dome, 11 miles from shore, rising 290 feet from bottom, in 600 feet of water, that attracts fish. Closer to port, king mackerel, sailfish and a few mahi mahi were trolled on live bait, offshore of the reef, a few miles from the dock. Call: 305-451-9578 or 305-360-2120. Visit Website.
