Offseason Fishing Report 3-17-15

NEW YORK

Point Lookout

A trip fished Friday on the party boat Captain Al, Capt. Tom Weiss said. A handful of cod and a couple of ling were cranked in, not good fishing. The ocean was cold or 36 degrees, and the trip fished in depths up to 200 feet. No trips fished during the weekend aboard, and none will sail this week, because the boat is supposed to be brought to the shipyard. That will be to “prepare the Captain Al for another long season of filling buckets with tasty fish,” the vessel’s Facebook page said. Fishing aboard will probably resume during the first weekend of April, sailing Fridays through Sundays. Then trips will target ling, cod and maybe winter flounder, if flounder migrate to the ocean by then. Porgies will be targeted, when porgy season is opened. Trips begin to fish daily as demand picks up for the fishing season. The Captain Al targets cod throughout winter, when cod are most abundant off the local coast, usually from late December through January or later. The winter trips sail daily at first, and then on Fridays through Sundays, as demand somewhat slows during the cold months. In winter, the boat is this site’s nearest to New Jersey that fishes for cod daily, and then every weekend. When cod are in, the trips target them. Otherwise, the trips fish wrecks for cod, ling and whatever bites. Other species are targeted in spring through fall. See More Info. Call: 516-623-2248.

NORTH CAROLINA

Oregon Inlet

Lots of undersized bluefin tuna were released Friday on boats from Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, a report said on the marina’s website. Some larger bluefins broke off, and large ones were marked, and some seemed to be missed. Commercial boaters landed some sizable. Trips that day also bagged yellowfin tuna that were scattered. Saturday began with wind and rain, but boaters fished, returning with a few bluefins and plenty of yellowfins, “(an) action-packed day,” the report said. On Sunday, one bluefin was docked, and trips that day also bagged yellowfins, mahi mahi and wahoos. On Monday, one bluefin was lost at the boat. The crew shared a photo of the fish, showing the tuna was 85 to 90 inches. Visit Website.

Hatteras

One of the boats from the docks caught bluefin tuna last week, a report said on the website from The Roost Bait & Tackle at Teach’s Lair Marina. Puppy drum and larger drum were slid from the surf. Four of the drum were citation fish, 40 inches or larger. Visit Website.
