Ice Chisels

Most anglers who will ice fish this
winter will wait for reports that the ice
is fishable, before planning to go.

But who makes those reports?

Maybe someone with a
Frabill Ice Chisel.

The 5-foot 4-inch chisel, or 64-incher,
a two-piece for easy transport, is made
to test whether the ice is thick enough to fish on.

The steel chisel is a substantial weight,
12 pounds, and sports a sort of stair-stepped head that makes significant chunks of ice fly, the company says.

Frabill also makes a 26-inch version, or a 2-foot 2-incher, weighing 4 ½ pounds, also a substantial weight, that’s meant to chip out the ice holes, as they freeze during fishing, or unseat a tip-up that becomes frozen in the hole.

Maybe you’re a pioneer, and will go for the 64-incher, to find fishable ice on your own.

Or maybe you’ll wait for reports that say the ice is being fished, but you’ll still need a chisel, like the 26-incher,
to keep the holes clear.
