First Strike and Black Widow Rods

Almost seems innovation is no longer possible for fishing rods.

But carbon or graphite handles were notable recently.

Outdoor Life named the handles one of the year’s top-five tackle innovations.

The magazine noted that Edge rods feature the handles.

Rod blanks have been made from carbon for years, but the sensitive material, when used in handles, keeps anglers “in constant contact with the blank,” the magazine said.

Two models of Edge rods, designed by Gary Loomis, feature carbon handles: First Strike and Black Widow, introduced in 2014.

Cork, commonly used in handles, is an insulator, and graphite is a conductor, Gary says.

Both models come in various sizes for spinning and casting reels, and click the names of the models above for the specs and details.

Gary is arguably the most famous rod designer, most known for his rod company G. Loomis that was sold.

Edge is his latest company.

Like how innovation almost seems impossible in rods, would seem impossible for Gary to keep coming up with new ideas that matter in rods.

Seems he’s done it again.
