Coltsniper Jerkbait

Chuck a swimming plug in the surf, and you might notice how the lure is engineered to cast far.

Clever shapes and displacement of weight make it pitch farther than you’d expect.

And that matters, because long casts can enable more opportunities to catch from the beach.

Shimano’s Coltsniper Jerkbait, introduced this year, features a "Propulsion Weight Transfer System for exceptional long distance casting," the company's website says.

That’s a weight inside the plug that slides to the back during casts and springs forward when the lure hits the water, because of a spring inside.

Watch a short video somebody posted that shows the system.

The lure casts up to 22 percent longer than lures with similar weight and length, Shimano says.

The lip on the “slow-floating” plug can make the lure fish 3 to 5 feet below the water surface.

The jerkbait comes in two sizes and different colors.

For East Coast anglers, the lure is especially made for striped bass fishing.

Striper plugs like this are commonly fished in the surf.

The jerkbait can also be trolled.

Shimano previously introduced Coltsniper jigs and stickbaits.
