Star S-Series Reels

Star Fishing Tackle from Morehead City, N.C., is known for manufacturing fishing rods that are affordable yet handcrafted and good quality.

The company, founded in 1958, makes rods for fishing in saltwater from the surf to offshore.

The rods are painstakingly built by hand, one at a time, the company says.

And Star was already making one line of reels.

The company is introducing another that looks interesting, named the S Series Reels.

The “S” stands for surf.

Finally, a spinning reel for the surf that’s made with a basic no-frills approach, like surf reels were made in the good old days, the company says.

The reels come in two sizes: the S700 and S800.

Star examined some of the most iconic surf reels ever made and incorporated the design into a modern reel, the company says.

Star says it looked at pros and cons of previous reels, and came up with a simple, durable design that’s also easy to service.

The reels are meant to be work horses with no frills.

They’re the most affordable reels in their class, Star says, and the company’s recommended retail price is $179.

The line capacity for the S700 is 325 yards of 15-pound mono or 400 yards of 40-pound braid, and for the S800 is 450 yards of 15-pound mono or 510 yards of 50-pound braid.

The reels can be used with a wire bail or bailess, and a bail is included with each so the angler has the option.
