Got a cordless drill but no ice-fishing auger? Use the Ice Auger Conversion Kit, from Clam Outdoors, to turn the drill into an auger. You have to buy the auger bit separately. But if you have the cordless drill already, the price of the kit, $69.99, and the bit can be less than a traditional power auger. Plus, the kit makes a lightweight and particularly portable power auger. The company recommends a high-torque drill that uses an18-volt lithium battery. Lithium batteries are long-life but also are best for the cold. Run-of-the-mill batteries will go kaput in low temperatures. A ball bearing in the kit absorbs the torque of the blades plowing through the ice, so the cordless drill doesn’t absorb that stress. Just pull the trigger, and start drilling, the company says.
