Custom, Hand Poured, Soft Plastic Baits

The "snake."

Capt. Mike Hogan created Hogy baits while he was guiding on Cape Cod. He wanted to design a life-like, soft-plastic lure that fished well from slow to fast retrieves. He also wanted a bait with tandem hooks to help avoid missed fish from short strikes. And he was looking for a system that made rigging with tandem hooks go quickly. Hogy Lures were invented.

The original Hogy was meant to fool striped bass and is still the most popular. The 10-inch soft-plastic lure can imitate large baits such as eels, bunker and squids. They were created to fish with Hogy's Quick Rig System of tandem hooks, but also work with a large jighead or an offset worm hook.

Additional Models

The design was since expanded to include different models to target a variety of fish, from stripers to bluefish, weakfish, bluefin tuna, mahi mahi, king mackerel, snook, largemouth bass, pike and more.

The 14-inch, monster-sized bait can imitate very large eels or can substitute for tube lures or large worms. It’s so long that it actually has a double bend when worked properly.

The 10-inch Jiggin Hogy is designed to be a “swim-bait” fished on jigheads.

The 7-incher is the newest model, created for situations when smaller baits are in the area. Although they were

designed to fish with the Hogy tandem lures, they also became popular with anglers who fished them on a jighead or a single, offset worm hook.

Other models are also in the works, such as a 10-inch double-wide for long casting and imitating portly baits, and an 18-inch, super-long bait for large striped bass and situations such as wire-line trolling in deep water, like trolling a tube-and-worm rig.

Colors

Hogy lures come in black, bubble gum, bone, amber, chartreuse and purple. Additional colors are coming soon, but the company has limited the selection, because it wanted to stick with what works. “Our lures catch fish, not fishermen,” the company says.

Construction

Hand poured in the United States, Hogy lures are made from a proprietary blend of plastic intended to be amazingly soft, durable and the highest quality around. The finest materials and most advanced manufacturing techniques result in the best quality, instead of the lowest cost, the company says. The goal is to create a lure with amazing action that is downright tough and also won’t bleed when different colors are stored together.

Quick-Rig Tandem-Hook System

The Hogy Quick Rig System of tandem hooks used with these lures is meant to be tough, designed even to stand up to schoolie bluefin tuna. Constructed with crimps and 80-pound Jinkai monofilament, the system uses heavy-duty Eagle Claw Lazer hooks, not only intended to be indestructible hooks, but also designed to serve as a keel to ensure superior action. They come in 7-inch, 10-inch and 14-inch lengths.

Accessories

Hogy Lures offers accessories including: Soft-Bait Glue that can increase durability, such as when a drop is added where the hook enters and exits; packages of the rigged tandem hooks; jigheads; rattling eyes that can be inserted in the head of a soft bait for added appearance and action; apparel; and more.

New products will also be debuted--including a Hogy tin lure, weighted hooks with a low-bulk profile, and Hogy liquid scents that can flavor a bait with a few drops--and visit the company’s web site for the latest.

Fishing Reports Now tested the 10-inch, original Hogy while targeting stripers in Delaware Bay, and the staff agreed that it fished with surprising action, like a lively, swimming eel.
